Sales in the age of AI

Can AI SDR agents replace your SDRs yet? The good, the bad and the ugly of October 2026's launches

Disclosure: ThePipelineBots is published by Uassist.ME (uassistme.com), which sells outsourced SDR, CRM and research support. That gives us a stake in the "AI vs humans" question, so we've kept to what the sources say and labeled vendor claims as vendor-reported.

Short answer: Not on the evidence published so far. Salesforce's new agent, Hunter, asks a rep for approval on judgment calls and isn't generally available yet. The strongest published result, HubSpot's, is vendor-reported, and HubSpot itself credits a human follow-up call. If your buyers are in the EU, there's also a disclosure rule to plan for.

In the past few weeks, Salesforce announced a prospecting agent, HubSpot published results from its own, and Clay launched one. Here's what they actually announced, what the published results do and don't show, and the compliance issue that comes with any agent that talks to buyers.

What did Salesforce, HubSpot and Clay actually launch? (The good)

Salesforce Hunter. At Dreamforce, Salesforce introduced Hunter, an outbound sales agent built for Sales Cloud (destinationCRM, Oct 16, 2026). According to destinationCRM, Hunter is meant to help sellers find accounts and contacts, personalize outreach, prepare follow-ups, and create and update opportunities. It "learns teams' sales motion from calls, emails, and notes," works within existing permissions and approval rules, and "when a step needs a judgment call, Hunter shows its reasoning and asks the rep for approval first."

Salesforce named ZoomInfo, Demandbase and Apollo as Hunter's flagship data partners:

Partner What it supplies (per the sources) Source
ZoomInfo Company and contact data, intent signals and news. ZoomInfo says its data covers more than 100 million companies and 500 million contacts. Its press release says "No separate contracts are needed, ZoomInfo ships with Hunter out-of-the-box" (a quote it attributes to Salesforce's Rohan Punamia). ZoomInfo release, Business Wire, Oct 2026
Demandbase Engagement, buying-group and intent data, queried in plain language through its MCP server. destinationCRM, Oct 16, 2026
Apollo What it calls a network of 240 million contacts, exposed through seven actions such as Company Search, Person Enrich and Job Posting Enrich. destinationCRM, Oct 16, 2026

ZoomInfo's release says Hunter is "expected to be generally available later this year." So it isn't something you can buy and test today, and nobody has published independent results yet.

Clay's agent. At its Sculpt conference on Oct 8, 2026, Clay launched "a new way to use Clay, led by an agent that plans, runs, and improves your plays" (Clay blog, Oct 8, 2026). Clay's example task: "Find me ICP contacts at high-intent health tech companies and build a campaign to prospect into them." Clay says the agent "is available to all Sculpt-attendees today, and will be rolling out to additional users enrolled in our early access program in the coming weeks." Clay also said its Workflows product is "in beta now for all Clay users." These are Clay's own claims. IndustryLens, a competitive-monitoring site, called it a "Global Agent" (IndustryLens, Oct 15, 2026).

Do the published results prove AI SDRs work? (The bad)

HubSpot's Prospecting Agent pilot (vendor-reported). In a post on its own blog, HubSpot describes a pilot it ran in April 2026 with one of its sales teams (HubSpot blog, updated Oct 16, 2026). It enrolled "nearly all of each rep's cold book" in its Prospecting Agent, up from the 10–20% the team had been working manually. HubSpot reports "more than a 10x increase in booked meetings compared to our manual process" and says it "still doubled conversion" against its best manual campaigns. It also says more than 700 reps now use the agent.

These are HubSpot's own numbers about HubSpot's own product, and the post doesn't give the base figures behind "10x" or "doubled." Part of the jump in meetings may simply come from coverage: the pilot reached nearly the whole cold book instead of 10–20% of it. The post also credits a human step. When a prospect engaged, a rep called. HubSpot says "AI finds the signal, a human makes the call" is "what moved our pipeline."

Booked meetings aren't pipeline. Rob Anderson, CRO of TitanX, says he spent "400+ hours" building AI SDR agents for cold email, which moved reply rates "from 1% to 2%" (TitanX, Rob Anderson (article undated; exact date unconfirmed)). He writes that in his experience AI-booked meetings convert to qualified opportunities at lower rates, because agents are optimized for the booked meeting rather than the closed deal. That's one practitioner's experience, not a study. TitanX also sells a phone-targeting product and argues for human-led calling, so it has a stake in this argument.

Bad data in, bad outreach out. Both camps agree on this point. ZoomInfo's own executive says, "Every AI sales agent runs into the same limit: it can only reason over what's already in the CRM." In LeanData's customer survey (157 LeanData customers in GTM roles, May 2026; LeanData sells GTM orchestration software), 70% of respondents said poor data quality is undermining their AI results (LeanData, Aug 31, 2026). We cover this in more depth in our CRM hygiene piece: Do you need to clean your CRM before using an AI sales agent?

Do AI SDR agents have to tell buyers they're AI? (The ugly)

Article 50 of the EU AI Act applies from 2 August 2026 (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, EUR-Lex). It requires providers to design AI systems "intended to interact directly with natural persons" so that people "are informed that they are interacting with an AI system," unless that's obvious from context. The information must be given "in a clear and distinguishable manner at the latest at the time of the first interaction or exposure." Separate paragraphs cover marking synthetic content and disclosing deepfakes and AI-generated text published to inform the public.

What this means for outbound teams in practice, such as whether an AI-drafted email a rep approves counts as "interacting directly," isn't settled by the text alone. Ask your counsel. US rules on AI-generated voices in cold calls are outside the scope of this piece; we'll cover them separately once we've checked the FCC's own text.

What should sales teams do now?

  1. Keep a human in the loop. The agents being shipped do: Hunter asks a rep for approval on judgment calls, and HubSpot credits a rep's phone call.
  2. Ask any vendor for base numbers, not multiples, and for results measured in pipeline or opportunities, not booked meetings.
  3. Before you switch an agent on, fix the data it will reason over.
  4. If any of your buyers are in the EU, plan for AI disclosure in your outreach.

FAQ

Is Salesforce Hunter available now? Not yet. ZoomInfo's October 2026 release says Hunter is "expected to be generally available later this year" (Business Wire).

Did HubSpot's AI agent really get 10x more meetings? That's HubSpot's own, vendor-reported figure from an April 2026 pilot with one sales team. The post doesn't give the base numbers, and the pilot covered nearly the whole cold book instead of 10–20% of it (HubSpot blog).

Which data providers does Salesforce Hunter use? Salesforce named ZoomInfo, Demandbase and Apollo as Hunter's flagship data partners (destinationCRM, Oct 16, 2026).

Does the EU AI Act require AI sales agents to disclose that they're AI? Article 50, which applies from 2 August 2026, requires providers to design AI systems that interact directly with people so those people are informed they're interacting with an AI system, unless that's obvious (EUR-Lex). How it applies to rep-approved AI emails isn't settled by the text alone; ask your counsel.

Has Clay launched an AI agent? Yes. Clay announced an agent that plans, runs and improves GTM plays at its Sculpt conference on Oct 8, 2026 (Clay blog). Clay says it's available to Sculpt attendees first and is rolling out to early-access users in the following weeks.
